Yasuyoshi Chiba vince il World Press Photo 2020

L’attesa è finita, i vincitori del World Press Photo 2020 sono stati appena svelati. Yasuyoshi Chiba con “Straight Voice” vince il World Press Photo 2020 e il primo premio nella categoria General News, Singles.

Le proteste in Sudan sono iniziate a dicembre 2018 e si sono diffuse rapidamente in tutto il paese. Ad aprile 2019, i manifestanti stavano organizzando un sit-in vicino al quartier generale dell’esercito nella capitale Khartum, e chiedendo la fine della regola trentennale del dittatore Omar al-Bashir. L’11 aprile, al-Bashir fu rimosso dall’incarico in un colpo di stato militare e fu istituito un governo militare di transizione. Le proteste sono continuate, chiedendo che il potere fosse consegnato a gruppi civili. Il 3 giugno, le forze governative hanno aperto il fuoco su manifestanti disarmati. Decine di persone furono uccise e molte altre furono soggette a ulteriori violenze. Tre giorni dopo l’Unione Africana ha sospeso il Sudan, nel mezzo della diffusa condanna internazionale dell’attacco. Le autorità hanno cercato di disinnescare le proteste imponendo blackout e chiudendo Internet. I manifestanti hanno comunicato tramite sms, passaparola e usando megafoni e la resistenza al governo militare è continuata. Nonostante un altro severo giro di vite il 30 giugno, il movimento democratico alla fine riuscì a firmare un accordo di condivisione del potere con i militari, il 17 agosto.

I giovani rappresentano oltre la metà della popolazione algerina e, secondo un rapporto dell’UNESCO, il 72% delle persone con meno di 30 anni in Algeria è disoccupato. Momenti cruciali della storia algerina, come la rivolta del “Black October” del 1988, hanno avuto la rabbia dei giovani al centro. Il Black October è stato duramente represso – più di 500 persone sono state uccise in cinque giorni – ed è stata seguita da un “decennio nero” di violenza e disordini. Trenta anni dopo, gli effetti di quel decennio sono ancora presenti. In un paese traumatizzato, l’elevata disoccupazione porta alla noia e alla frustrazione nella vita quotidiana e molti giovani si sentono dissociati dallo stato e dalle sue istituzioni. In quartieri della classe operaia trascurati come Bab el-Oued ad Algeri, i giovani spesso cercano rifugio in diki, luoghi privati che sono “bolle di libertà” lontano dallo sguardo della società e da valori sociali conservatori. Ma il senso di comunità e solidarietà spesso non è sufficiente per cancellare le prove di cattive condizioni di vita. Nel febbraio 2019, i giovani degli Stati Uniti provenienti dai quartieri della classe operaia sono scesi di nuovo in piazza in quella che è diventata una sfida a livello nazionale per il regno del presidente di lunga data Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Kho (la parola significa “fratello” nell’arabo nord-africano colloquiale) parla della genesi di una rivolta. È la storia del profondo disagio della gioventù che, osando sfidare l’autorità, ha ispirato il resto della popolazione a unirsi alla loro azione, dando vita al più grande movimento di protesta in Algeria degli ultimi decenni.

Non solo, perché sono stati rivelati anche i vincitori di ogni singola categoria in gara, scelti tra 4282 fotografi provenienti da 125 Paesi, per un totale di 73996 immagini in gara.
